Badaling is the most visited and best-restored section of the Great Wall, about 70 km northwest of central Beijing. Built during the Ming dynasty, its broad ramparts, watchtowers, and dramatic mountain setting offer a clear sense of the Wall’s scale and defensive design. Paved paths, handrails, and a cable car make access easier than at wilder sections. Crowds are common, especially on weekends and holidays; early morning or off-season visits are quieter. Ideal for first-time visitors seeking classic views and solid infrastructure; those wanting rugged hiking may prefer Mutianyu, Jinshanling, or less-developed stretches.
