Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
St George’s Cathedral (built 1896–1911) is a landmark of Ethiopian Orthodox heritage in central Addis Ababa. Octagonal and modestly grand, it commemorates Ethiopia’s victory at Adwa and houses relics linked to Emperor Menelik II and Empress Taytu. Inside, vivid modernist murals by Afewerk Tekle and traditional icons trace church history and national identity. A small museum displays crowns, vestments, and battle memorabilia. The peaceful courtyard offers respite from the city, especially on holy days when chanting fills the air. Visit for architecture, art, and context on Ethiopia’s independence and faith; modest dress and respectful conduct are expected.
