About Red Terror Martyrs’ Memorial Museum

The Red Terror Martyrs’ Memorial Museum in central Addis Ababa documents Ethiopia’s 1970s Derg-era repression through survivor testimonies, photographs, personal effects, and mass-grave remains. Guided tours (often by survivors) provide clear historical context, from protests to purges, and honor thousands who were killed. Exhibits are stark and emotionally challenging, but thoughtfully curated and free to enter (donations welcome). Located near Meskel Square, it’s easily combined with nearby sights. Visit if you’re interested in recent Ethiopian history, human rights, or memorial culture; sensitive visitors should be prepared for graphic content and a somber atmosphere. Allow 60–90 minutes.
