Accra, Ghana
Independence Square (Black Star Square) is Ghana’s foremost ceremonial ground, built in 1961 to mark independence. The vast plaza, dominated by the Black Star Gate and Independence Arch, hosts national parades and public events with the Atlantic as a backdrop. Visitors come for its symbolic value, open space, and photo-friendly monuments rather than on-site attractions. Expect brief stops, especially en route to nearby Osu and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park. Go for a glimpse of modern Ghanaian nationhood; visit early morning or late afternoon for cooler temperatures and better light. Entry is generally free, with occasional closures during events.
